Cotard Syndrome-Feeling like Dead Man (symptoms, classes)

What is Cotard Syndrome?

Many people have a desire to know the situation after death. Who will cry after his/her death, what will say about him etc. Many people think these thoughts are in their subconscious mind. Surprisingly, these facts may be true. But for that he has to suffer from Cotard Syndrome.

Cotard Syndrome-Feeling like Dead Man. Cotard syndrome is a type of mental problem. At this syndrome the patients think that they are not alive, their body is just lying down and their soul has left them long ago.

When depression completely engulfs a person's mind, the person starts to think of himself as small, hates, feels inferior, feels helpless, doesn't care because he doesn't exist in the world - such thoughts come into him.

Classification of Cotard syndrome:

Ludet and Martinez were the first to pay close attention to the classification of this disorder. Then in 1968 they mentioned  these three variants- saavedra dipresive, mixed and schizophrenic.

However, in 1995, Barius and Luke divided it into three categories, which are recognized as the first classification of the disease based on case studies and evidence. These are,

  • Psychotic depression with symptoms such as anxiety, guilt and auditory hallucinations
  • Cotard syndrome type 1 with symptoms such as hypochondriac and nihilistic dilution.
  • Cotard syndrome type 2 with symptoms such as depression, confusion of immortality and suicidal tendencies.

Different stages of Cotard syndrome:

The symptoms of Cotard syndrome are very varied and may change over time. In1999 after a long-term study, researcher Yamada Kasturagi and his colleagues were able to determine the three stages of the disease, which were published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica that year.

These are:

  • Transition Stage: Another name for this stage is Germination Stage. In this condition, the patient's mood changes from time to time. Depression, the fear of becoming infected, or the fear of not being able to get rid of the disease even after proper treatment surround the patient's mind.
  • Blooming Stage: It is known as Blooming Stage. Because at this stage the patient begins to feel the main symptoms of the disease. For example, to think of oneself as dead or to imagine oneself as immortal. Anxiety and fear are also seen.
  • Chronic stage: At this stage the patient becomes prone to severe depression. There is inconsistency in his emotions. In some cases he may suffer from paranoia.

Symptoms of Cotard syndrome:

The first and foremost symptom of Cotard syndrome is a nihilistic attitude. The essence of this attitude is that life has no meaning, nothing has any meaning. People who suffer from Cotard Syndrome think that this whole world is an illusion or a fantasy that it is impossible to find any real existence.

Most of the patients with Cotard syndrome suffer from chronic depression. In 2011 a study found that 89% of patients with Cortad syndrome admitted that depression was one of their symptoms. The results of the study, which looked at more than 100 case studies, found that the main symptoms were negative attitudes (69%), anxiety (65%), guilt confusion (63%), immortality (55%), and hypochondriac dilution. (58%).

Depression is a disorder that is affecting more and more people. Which caused them to begin to think of their own lives and existence as trivial and meaningless. They think that "There is nobody in nowhere."

The tendency to think of oneself as insignificant and non-existent also affects their way of life. Many lose the purpose of life. Living aimlessly and wandering becomes their daily routine.

Patients with this disease spend day after day without taking a bath. Many people stop cutting their nails and hair. Because to them their bodies are 'dead'! Many people are one more stick ahead! After responding to the call of nature, reluctance to perform the toilet is seen among them.

Many patients feel that they do not feel the presence of their limbs and other vital organs. However, general medical examinations do not show any signs of paralysis or numbness.
